Measuring For Trapezoid Cushions

How to Measure for Trapezoid Cushions

Measure Your Furniture For Custom Trapezoid Shaped Cushions

Trapezoid cushions are often an ideal option for seating areas that are not perfectly square as they have different front and back width measurements. Trapezoid shaped seating is common with all types of chair seats, benches, window bays and more. The required measurements to create a trapezoid shaped cushion include a front width, a back width, a depth measurement from front to back, and a thickness. Follow the step-by-step instructions below for an optimal fit.
  • Trapezoid Cushion Depth

Step 1 - Trapezoid Cushion Depth

The trapezoid cushion depth is measured directly from the front of the cushion to the back as shown in the image.

Incorrect Method Of Measuring Trapezoid Depth
DO NOT measure the angled sides of your furniture or existing cushion as this will result in a cushion that is too deep.
  • Trapezoid Front Width

Step 2 - Trapezoid Cushion Front Width

The bench cushion width is measured from side to side as shown in the image on the left.

Remember that you must measure the actual area of your furniture that you would like to be covered by the cushion, not an old bench cushion.

Trapezoid cushions wider than 50″ may require a seam in the center when selecting striped fabrics.

  • Trapezoid Back Width

Step 3 - Trapezoid Cushion Back Width

The trapezoid cushion back width is measured from corner to corner as shown in the image.

The zipper is located along the back width.

Trapezoid cushions wider than 50″ may require a seam in the center when selecting striped fabrics.

  • Cushion Thickness

Step 4 - Trapezoid Cushion Thickness

Select your desired thickness for your trapezoid cushion. Our trapezoid shaped cushions range in thickness from 2 to 5 inches and can be adjusted in increments of 1 inch.

Measuring Tips
Required Measurements
  • Front Width
  • Back Width
  • Depth
  • Thickness

Measure The Depth Correctly
In order to obtain an accurate depth measurement, you must measure the depth of your trapezoid furniture from front to back at the center of your chair, bench or window bay. Do not measure the sides of your trapezoid furniture or cushion as this will result in a cushion that is too deep.

Determine The Correct Thickness
If you are unsure what cushion thickness to select, you can easily determine the optimal cushion thickness for your trapezoid chair or bench frame by stacking a book or two on the seat to get a rough idea of how thick your cushion should be. If your furniture frame has arm rests, make sure that the cushion is not too thick as this could result in the arms being too low for the person sitting on the chair or bench.

Do Not Measure Old Cushions
Do not measure an existing or old cushions to order a new custom cushion. Instead, measure the area of the furniture that you would like to be covered by the new cushion. Using measurements obtained from old cushions may result in new cushions that do not fit properly as cushions often change in size as the fabric becomes worn and stretches from use.

Use The Right Tools
For the most accurate results, we recommend using a rigid measuring tool such as a carpenter's tape measure or a measuring stick. Avoid using 'soft' measuring tools such as tailor's tape.

Round Your Measurements
Your width and depth measurements should be rounded up or rounded down to the nearest ½ inch as most dimensions on our site can be adjusted in ½ inch increments.
