Bench Cushion Measuring Guide

How to Measure for Bench Cushions

How To Measure Your Bench For Custom Cushions

Use the following step-by-step measuring instructions to guide you through measuring your benches, swings, gliders or other rectangular seating areas for new custom cushions. Most of our bench cushion styles require width and depth measurements, which are adjustable in ½ inch increments, as well as a thickness measurement which is adjustable in 1 inch increments from 2 to 5 inches thick.

  • Thickness Measurement

Step 1 - Bench Cushion Thickness

We recommend selecting your cushion thickness first. Our bench cushions range in thickness from 2 to 5 inches, depending on the style and construction selected, and can be adjusted in 1 inch increments.

  • Width Measurement

Step 2 - Bench Cushion Width

The width of the bench is measured from side to side as shown.

Remember that you must measure the actual area of your furniture that you would like to be covered by the cushion, not an old bench cushion.

  • Depth Measurement

Step 3 - Bench Cushion Depth

The depth of the bench is measured from front to back as shown.

Measuring Tips
Required Measurements
  • Width
  • Depth
  • Thickness

Determine The Correct Thickness
If you are unsure what cushion thickness to select, you can easily determine the optimal cushion thickness for your bench frame by stacking a book or two on your bench seat to get a rough idea of how thick your cushion should be. If your bench frame has arm rests, make sure that the cushion is not too thick as this could result in the arms being too low for the person sitting on the bench.

Do Not Measure Old Cushions
Do not measure an existing or old bench pad to order a new cushion. Instead, measure the area of the furniture that you would like to be covered by the new cushion. Using measurements obtained from old cushions may result in new cushions that do not fit properly as cushions often change in size as the fabric becomes worn and stretches from use.

Use The Right Tools
For the most accurate results, we recommend using a rigid measuring tool such as a carpenter's tape measure or a measuring stick. Avoid using 'soft' measuring tools such as tailor's tape.

Round Your Measurements
Your width and depth measurements should be rounded up or rounded down to the nearest ½ inch as most dimensions on our site can be adjusted to a ½ inch prescision.
