Deep Seating Chair Measuring Guide

How to Measure for Deep Seating Chair Cushions

How To Measure For A Deep Seating Chair Cushion Set

Custom deep seating cushions are versatile two-piece cushion sets that can be used for a wide range of seating arrangements. From individual deep seating chairs and sectional furniture to loveseats and sofas, these seat and back cushion sets are tailor-made to your specifications. For a two-piece cushion set, six measurements are required from your furniture. Width and depth measurements are required for the seat pad, along with a thickness measurement. The back pad requires both a width and a height measurement, as well as a thickness.

  • Step 1 - Chair Seat Cushion Thickness

We recommend selecting your cushion thickness first. Our chair cushions range in thickness from 2 to 5 inches.

  • Step 2 - Chair Seat Cushion Width

The chair cushion seat width is measured from side to side as shown.

Remember that you must measure the actual area of your furniture that you would like to be covered by the cushion, not an old chair cushion.

  • Step 3 - Chair Seat Cushion Depth

The chair cushion's seat portion is measured from front to back as shown.

  • Step 4 - Chair Back Cushion Thickness

Select your back cushion thickness. Our chair cushions range in thickness from 2 to 6 inches.

  • Step 5 - Chair Back Cushion Width

The chair cushion back width is measured from side to side as shown.

Like the seat cushion width, you must measure the actual area of your furniture that you would like to be covered by the cushion, not an old chair cushion.

  • Step 6 - Chair Back Cushion Height

    Overall Back Height
Measure the overall height from the bottom of the back to the top of the back, or the height you would like your cushions to go up on the back of your chair.

    Deduct Seat Thickness
Once you have the overall back height measurement, you will need to deduct the thickness of the seat cushion from the overall height of the back of the chair. Otherwise, the back cushion will be too tall for the frame.

Cushion Corner Specifications

Determine The Correct Thickness
If you are unsure what cushion thickness to select, you can easily determine the optimal cushion thickness for your deep seating chair frame by stacking a book or two on your bench seat to get a rough idea of how thick your cushion should be. If your deep seating chair frame has arm rests, make sure that the cushion is not too thick as this could result in the arms being too low for the person sitting on the furniture.

Measure The Back Height Correctly
If the back cushion of your deep seating cushion set will rest on top of the seat cushion, the seat thickness must be deducted from the overall back measurement. In order to avoid ordering a back cushion that is too tall for your chair, measure the overall height of your chair back, then deduct your selected seat thickness from that overall measurement.

Do Not Measure Old Cushions
Do not measure an existing or old chair cushions to order a new custom cushion. Instead, measure the area of the chair that you would like to be covered by the new cushion. Using measurements obtained from an old chair cushion may result in new cushions that do not fit properly as cushions often change in size as the fabric becomes worn and stretches from use.

Use The Right Tools
For the most accurate results, we recommend using a rigid measuring tool such as a carpenter's tape measure or a measuring stick. Avoid using 'soft' measuring tools such as tailor's tape.

Round Your Measurements
Your width, seat and back measurements should be rounded up or rounded down to the nearest ½ inch as most dimensions on our site can be adjusted to a ½ inch prescision.
